Total War: SHOGUN 2 1vs1: Uesugi Bow Warrior Monks vs Tosa Riflemen (FOTS)

Total War: SHOGUN 2 1vs1: Uesugi Bow Warrior Monks vs Tosa Riflemen (Fall of the Samurai) Clan: Uesugi vs Tosa Battle Difficulty: normal Uesugi Bow Warrior Monks: Flaming Arrows & Whistling Arrows used Bow Warrior Monks are some of the finest archers in Total War: Shogun 2. While they are not as numerous as Bow Samurai or Bow Ashigaru, their superior accuracy and reloading times more than make up for this. They are also aided by having a longer range than either of the former; the only missile infantry that can match them are the Chosokabe Daikyu Samurai and the Bow Hero. Like all monk units, however, Bow Warrior Monks have very poor armor and suffer if attacked by other bow-armed units. While their melee statistics are better than most other missile infantry, their mediocre melee combined with their low numbers and poor armor make them weak in melee fighting. The primary weakness of bow warrior monks is the steep research requirements needed to unlock them: Essence of the Spirit, the Way of the Bow, and all their prerequisites are required just to train them, and Chonindo as well as Heaven and Earth both unlock buildings that make them fire more accurately, but researching all of these technologies would take in excess of 70 turns with the default research rate. Bow ashigaru, in comparison, are immediately available and fulfill a similar role. Bow Warrior Monks do not benefit as much from increased accuracy due to their already superb base stats, however, so even un-upgraded bow warrior monks trained in the early-mid game may still be useful for end-game armies. Like other warrior monks, Bow Warrior Monks are only available to non-Christian factions for recruiting. Should a faction controlling Bow Warrior Monks convert to Christianity, they automatically disband. However, bow warrior monks can be bribed by Christian Metsuke to fight for their faction. Uesugi Bow Warrior Monks are cheaper to train and maintain at 950/200 instead of 1000/220, and have +5 reload skill and +5 accuracy. Tosa Riflemen are variants of sharpshooters unique to the Tosa. They are superior to sharpshooters in every way save range, armor, and cost. The greatest strengths of Tosa Riflemen are their extremely high reload skill, at 65 compared to 25 for sharpshooters. This allows them to very quickly dispense ammo and inflict large numbers of casualties. Despite their much higher fire rate thanks to their reload skill, Tosa Riflemen rarely have trouble with ammunition shortages due to their much higher starting ammunition of 40 rather than 20. Tosa Riflemen are somewhat more expensive than their sharpshooter counterparts but their greatly increased damage output more than make up for this. Their abnormally high ammunition means that they can pick off entire regiments, particularly during siege battles where defenders can't risk sallying out but also usually have inferior range. Tosa Riflemen are easily recruited, with requirements that are easily met even early in the campaign. Later in the game, Tosa Riflemen benefit from buildings such as gunsmiths and firing ranges, as these buildings greatly increase the accuracy of units trained in regions they are built in. The only other non-sharpshooter light infantry in Fall of the Samurai, the Yugekitai, have superior accuracy to Tosa Riflemen; however, their reload skill is much worse. While their initial volley may be superior than that of Tosa Riflemen, over time Tosa Riflemen inflict more damage. Tosa Riflemen also have no regiment cap, unlike the Yugekitai; however, Tosa Riflemen lack the kisho training Yugekitai have, and thus have poorer stealth capabilities.
