Yamaha RT180 Dirt Bike Restoration (Part 4) | Petcock Valve Repair & Carburetor Rebuild In this episode of the Yamaha RT180 Restoration series, we dive into the intricate work of restoring the petcock valve and cleaning the carburetor. These components are essential to ensuring the bike runs smoothly, but they presented us with some unique challenges along the way. Here's what you'll see in this video: • Petcock Valve Repair: The petcock valve, which wasn’t functioning properly due to age and rust, required a rare seal and some ingenuity. Since new petcock valves for this model are no longer available for purchase, we had to get creative. After sourcing a Suzuki seal from a local motorcycle salvage yard, we used JB Cold Weld to reinforce and restore the valve. While this was a tricky repair, it was the only option for this vintage bike, and the valve now operates as intended—though we decided to only use the reserve setting to avoid the issues caused by rust accumulation in the "on" position. • Carburetor Breakdown and Cleaning: The carburetor was next on the list. We take apart and clean all the components, including the small jets and passages. We show the full process of removing various parts of the dirt bike, such as the airbox and oil injection reservoir, to access and extract the carburetor. Then, with a combination of brake cleaner, compressed air, and some careful disassembly, we thoroughly clean the carburetor, blowing out all the grime and ensuring everything is functioning properly. • Learning Curve: While this is my first time cleaning a carburetor on my own, the experience proved invaluable. I made sure to clean every jet, needle, and component—there’s even a moment where I discover a hidden jet beneath the float, which may have been contributing to the bike’s choke-related issues. • Final Touches: After reassembling the carburetor, begin to prep the bike frame for cleaning! The next step? See if the dirt bike will fire up and run smoothly with its newly cleaned carburetor and restored petcock valve. This video is full of hands-on tips for those working on older motorcycles, especially when dealing with hard-to-find parts. Whether you’re rebuilding an RT180 or just learning how to clean a carburetor for the first time, this episode covers all the essentials! / technicallymatt / technically_matt / technically.matt
