BMW R1200GS ADV Namibia Travel

Namibia – A recharge for the soul. Living in Southern Africa adventure will be pumping through your veins and the “average Jo” craves travel like your body needs air to breath. At the first opportunity after all the lockdowns we packed the camping gear and jump on the “Rhino”, pointed it towards the Namibia boarder. The idea was to stay outside the boarders of our red listed covid country for two weeks so this will allow me to head back to work. We started the trip from Durbanville, South Africa late afternoon and headed to Vanrhynsdorp. After having an amazing breakfast at Letsatsi Lodge it was time to cross the South Africa and Namibian border. On route we met the famous African traveler Johan Badenhorts and the “Voetspore” team, while busy filming their next adventure series. We suspected that our covid infection happened when we crossed the South Africa Namibia. About 6 days later did we start showing some symptoms. Once in Namibia we booked in at Felix Unit river camp. During this time we made our reservations one day at a time. 99% of all the hotel and B&B were mostly empty. Even though they were hard up for business most of the places were only operating with skeleton staff and limited facilities open. Southern Africa tourism supports a huge work force, everyone we met along the road were just so happy to see some travelers back on the road. From the river camp at Felix Unit we planned a long days’ (and half of the night) ride all the way to Desert Grace lodge just past the Sossusvlei valley. Strong winds, lots of sand and a heavy overloaded “Rhino” made for a long exhausting day in the saddle. Reminder to self: do not overload the bike and do not travel at night. When traveling at night besides the fact that you might have limited support and assistance from passersby, you just do not see any of the amazing scenery you are traveling through. Arriving late in the evening at Desert Grace the friendly staff was more than willing the open the kitchen and serve us with an amazing meal and drinks to quince a hungry travelers’ thirst. The most amazing private room and bed awaited us. I am sure the bed was stitched together with fluffy clouds as I drifted away to dreamland in mere seconds. The next morning we woke to the glowing red and yellow dunes that the Sossusvlei area is famous for. Meeting up with some friends we spend the day walking some short trails. At the end of day we were spoiled with colorful drinks to match the desert sky and landscape. Saying goodbye to our old and new friends at the Desert Grace Lodge we continue our travels to Walvisbay and Swakopmund. This took pass the fueling stop of Solitaire and its’ famous apple pie. From here the scenery changes around every corner, from the golden dunes to rocky canyons flowing into wastelands of the Skeleton coast. Taking a few days of rest at Bayview hotel allowing us to experience the delights and home crafts of Walvisbay and Swakopmund. Continuing our planned travels to Caprivi we made a planned stop in Windhoek for some resupplies and was pulled out of our fantasy travels by the covid bug. Windhoek and 2 other towns were place under severe lockdown travel restrictions, and we couldn’t travel out of Windhoek. We took this opportunity to hopscotch between hotels until we found a lovely venue at Am Weinberg Boutique Hotel. During preparation to place the “Rhino” in storage and international travel we received positive PCR results. With great support from the personnel at the Am Weinberg Boutique Hotel we complete the isolation period and then headed back home as international travel from Namibia was temporarily band.
