Travel Days, Day 0: Denver to St Jean Pied De Port | Camino Frances | Camino De Santiago | May-July

#caminodesantiago #caminofrances #camino #buencamino #santiagodecompostela May 20-May 23, 2022 Denver to Madrid, Spain Madrid to St Jean Pied De Port, France May 20-21: "You don't choose a life. You live one." We made it to Madrid, Andre's birthplace on his 53rd birthday!! We're still pinching ourselves. Our 2nd flight from JFK to Madrid was a disaster, delayed by more than 6 hours..but we bonded with a group of people on our flight and made the best of it, even when one guy was removed from the plane by security. Tomorrow we head to Pamplona and then France-St Jean Pied De Port where we will start our 500 mile Camino in a few days. But today, we're just savoring the smells, sounds, and laughter of Madrid (and recovering from jet lag). And living our life. Today, we're living. Buen Camino!! P.S. Spain has the very best olives we've ever had. Our hotel offers free snacks and drinks. Let's just say we had 6 free jars of olives. And a shout-out to our brother in law who surprised us in Denver at our hotel and sent us off with a wonderful dinner. We love you Pedro!! May 22: "Be brave enough to travel the unknown path and learn what you are capable of." Travel Day 2: Bumpy flight to Pamplona, harrowing taxi ride through the Pyrenees Mountains, exhausted, a little insecure, but also excited for the unknown. We have arrived in St Jean Pied De Port France!! We met 2 lovely couples from the USA, stopped in the 13th century church and lit a candle for Danielle💙, got our Pilgrim's Passports and our first stamps as well as our trekking poles, found our first night's accomodations, and enjoyed jambon et vin. Planning for a rest day tomorrow to explore St Jean Pied De Port further before our first hiking day on Tuesday crossing the Pyrenees Mountains. The weather will be changing dramatically to much cooler, rainy conditions. Praying it will be a safe upcoming crossing over the Pyrenees. Until then, repose toi bien et prie pour avoir de la force! May 23: "No road is long when you are in the presence of good food and good company." Monday Rest Day 5/23/22: St Jean Pied De Port, France Today we awoke to the sounds of a rooster and birds singing their morning wakeup call as well as an amazing breakfast prepared by our house hosts consisting of French coffee with brown sugar cubes, omelette with cheese, fresh fruit, and french bread with home made jams. We marveled at our hosts adventures including previously owning and running a restaurant in London! The theme of the day: Food. At every corner we found it.. and at every corner we ate it. Each meal better than the last. I assert that we need fuel for what is to come. We also found the beginning to our hike tomorrow starting The Way, toured the Citadelle, found a bird ornament for my sister's tree that I will carry all the way to Santiago De Compostela, and we reentered the Notre-Dame du Bout du Pont Church again, this time to light a candle in memory of our dear friend Debra who passed away in 2020. Debra was the first person to introduce me to this special journey. With a fair amount of trepidation, we checked into our 1st hostel experience ever, Beilari, in St Jean for this evening's accomodations. We were assigned 2 beds, took showers, hand washed our laundry, and I accepted the fate of my Camino hair with no blow dryer or straightener. At 7:30 we joined all the pilgrims of the house for a shared vegetarian pilgrim's meal. It was one of the very best meals I have ever enjoyed. We could not all understand each other immediately, but as the wine flowed, our house host had us go around the table, introduce ourselves in our language, and share why we are walking the Camino if we felt comfortable to do so. I chose not to photograph or video any of this as it felt like each person's private journey and theirs alone to share. By the end of the evening, we were all laughing, hugging, using Google translate, and enjoying each other's energy. A pellegrino gentleman with the kindest eyes sitting across from me saying, "Andrea, for your sister." I went to bed feeling clearer as to why I'm here and also feeling a sense of peace. Camino Magic. Jusqu'à demain pèlerin! Buen Camino!
