In 2016 Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao laid the foundation stone for the massive Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project at Medigadda in Karimnagar district in Telangana. It is the world’s largest and most ambitious multi-stage lift irrigation project and has three barrages on the Godavari River – Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla. The project allows reverse pumping of water from the confluence point of Godavari and Pranhita Rivers to Sripada Yellampalli Project with the help of the 3 barrages and 3 lifts. It has pumping capacity of 2 TMC of water per day. Massive underground caverns were excavated to construct the pumphouses and surge pools to lift incoming water from underground. The project is a testament to the grit and commitment showed by the stakeholders for executing the project.   This engineering marvel is divided into 7 links and 28 packages spanning a distance of approximately 500 km through 13 districts and will comprise 1,832 km water supply route, 1,531 km gravity canal, 203 km tunnel routes, 20 lifts, 19 pump houses and 19 reservoirs with a storage capacity of 141 TMCs. It will produce a total of 240 TMC, of which 169 has been allocated for irrigation, 30 for Hyderabad municipal water, 16 for miscellaneous industrial uses and 10 for drinking water in nearby villages, with the remainder being estimated as evaporation loss.
