After India gained independence from the Britishers in 1947, there were more than 500 princely states in the country. These princely states had 3 options: join India, join Pakistan or remain independent. The integration of these princely states with India was undertaken by Sardar Patel and VP Menon. There were 6 states which actively resisted integration with India: Travancore, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Junagadh, Hyderabad, and Jammu & Kashmir. However, over the course of 2 years, Patel and Menon succeeded in ensuring the unification of India.
