A former amusement arcade and nightclub in the heart of Hastings Old Town has been sold for redevelopment. The property at 39-41 George Street has been vacant since 2019. The new owners of the site, Oasis Developments Hastings Ltd, have ambitious plans to knock down the current building and replace it with 20 new luxury apartments with commercial units on the ground floor. Shankar Devarashetty, the company CEO, says the redevelopment will “breathe new life into one of the town’s most important thoroughfares.” The current structure, built during the early part of the last century, holds no obvious historic interest other than to those who used to frequent its unique atmosphere. The ground floor used to be the popular, family-run, Olympia Amusement Park arcade, whilst the first floor housed what many consider to have been the town’s premier nightclub. From the 1970s onwards it was variously called Aquarius, Saturdays, Cloud 10, Saturdays (again) and finally, Waves but whatever its name, it was for many a place of great excitement and fun. David , from St Leonards, now of Icklesham, was a frequent visitor to the Saturdays club in the early 1990s. The place was so popular, he remembers, you had to leave the pub by 10:30 and queue up for what seemed like ages before you would climb up the steep stairs to the club. The dance floor was always packed and the music deafening. His favourite clubbing night was Tuesday when punters were tempted in with an un-missable 10p-per-pint offer. The club finally closed its doors in 2005. The Deluxe arcade followed in 2019. The property consultancy, Vail Williams, acting on behalf of the freeholder, put the property on the market last October with a guide price of £750,000. It was sold to the London-based property development company for an undisclosed fee. Steve Berrett, a Partner at Vail Williams, said the site “attracted a number of inquiries due to its location within the historic old town of Hastings, which is becoming even more popular with cafes, galleries and boutique shops.” Oasis Developments are expected to lodge plans for the new development with the local council shortly. A spokesman for the company said the proposals envisaged the “complete demolition of the existing structure with a rebuild to a high-quality standard, incorporating some of the historic features specific to George Street and Hastings.”
