Despite promising research suggesting that species may be discriminated using leaf spectra, and that these spectra can be linked to plant functional traits, there are still many gaps in our understanding of how spectra evolve and how spectra may vary within and among species through time, across environments, and between life forms. To identify primary axes of variation and identify drivers of spectral evolution, I am modeling the evolution of spectra and assessing differences in evolutionary model, spectral mean or optimum, and strength of selection across lineages, habitats, and life forms. I am using phylogenetic comparative methods, including explicit consideration of different models of evolution, to understand the evolution of leaf spectra in Canadian plants using spectral data collected by the Canadian Airborne Biodiversity Observatory. Here, I present the study overview and proposed methods, with simulations and preliminary analyses to illustrate the anticipated outcomes of the proposed research study. Presentation recorded during the 4th CABO Annual Meeting (8th November 2021). CABO project: https://www.caboscience.org/
