Ozo is the peak of traditional titles and recognition within Enugwu Ukwu town and Igboland. Ozo title holders are the traditional aristocrats of every Igbo community. So revered is the Ozo title that it forms the focus of every Igbo man's aspiration within his town. To qualify to be conferred with Ozo title one has to be a man of integrity, courage and wealth. The holders of this title belong to a fraternity known as Otu Ozo. To emphasise the importance of Ozo title the Constitution of Enugwu Ukwu does not only recognise it under section 21, but went further, under section 5 to place it as one of the major conditions of qualification for emerging as the Traditional Head of Enugwu Ukwu. There are several privileges the holders of Ozo title enjoy in the community. Legend has it that Okpadike, an Ozo title holder was deeply hurt by members of Ire Village. According to oral tradition, the assault was so grievous that Okpadike died from this. However, before he passed on he placed a curse which holds that any Ire village man that decided to take Ozo title would die seven market days after his initiation. Some men that attempted to take the title despite this curse were said to have lost their lives within the dark days. For over 300 years men of Ire Village could not get initiated into Ozo Enugwu Ukwu na Umunri. It was on Tuesday, Nkwo, December 22nd, 2020 that Professor Mike Okafor of Ire Village, with the support of Igwe Obumneme Ekpeh(Eze Enugwu Ukwu na Igwe Umunri) and members of Ozo Enugwu Ukwu, came forward to fulfill all the requirements, and got initiated into Ozo Enugwu Ukwu na Umunri. He was conferred with the name: Ozonkpu Owulubuego Enugwu Ukwu na Umunri. Thursday the 23 day of December, 2021, marked a full year since Owulubuego was initiated into Ozo Enugwu Ukwu na Umunri. Igbo traditional belief has it that whoever survives one year after going through a curse or oath is deemed innocent and therefore free from whatever such oath or curse portends. Such person declares his freedom by holding an open thanksgiving. It was for this purpose that EZE ENUGWU UKWU NA IGWE UMUNRI led the Procession of Ndị Ozo to Ire village Square to proclaim the liberty and freedom of Ire Village members to start participating and partaking in OZO titleship. ~ Ozonkpu JUDE EKWUNIFE, Okwuatuegwu Enugwu Ukwu na Umunri (Enugwu Ukwu Traditional Culture Minister. Secretary Ozo Enugwu Ukwu na Umunri)
