Science Café -- This is Your Brain on Drugs

Avid television watchers from the late-80s know the commercial well. A hot frying pan sizzles away on an oven. "This is drugs," says the narrator, before an egg is cracked into the pan. "This is your brain on drugs," concludes the narrator. Will using drugs really turn your brain into a fried egg? Does using drugs kill off brain cells? Why are some drugs more addictive than others? Join Kim Hellemans, instructor in the Department of Neuroscience, for a discussion on how drugs act in the brain to produce their unique perceptual, cognitive and behavioural effects. Discover why quitting might be easy, but staying sober is much harder than you think. Where: Wild Oat Café at 817 Bank Street. When: Wednesday, March 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The free 20-minute discussion will be followed by a question and answer session.
