With the completion of the lift span mechanism, Southern Railway successfully completed a trial run on the new Pamban Railway Sea Bridge. An OHE (overhead equipment) tower car was operated across the bridge to Rameswaram station. The installation of the centre lift span was completed in late July this year, followed by track connection work at both ends of the Pamban Bridge in July itself. The trial run of the OHE tower car on the new bridge was the first after 2022. According to the information, railway officials are expediting the remaining work to get the bridge ready before September, so that train services to Rameswaram can be resumed from October 1. Train services on the old Pamban Railway Sea Bridge were halted in December 2022 due to excessive vibrations detected by monitoring equipment of IIT Madras. The construction of the new Pamban bridge began in the year 2019. Here are some facts about the new Pamban railway bridge that you should know. The new Pamban bridge will have 100 spans of 18.3 metres and a navigational span of 63 metres. It will be 3.0 metres higher than the old bridge, providing a navigational air clearance of 22 metres above sea level. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the construction of the new Pamban railway bridge in November 2019. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited took up the project in February 2020. The completion date was originally December 2021. However, the deadline was extended due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The new bridge, spanning 2 kilometres, is designed to accommodate high-speed train operations and improve connectivity between the Indian mainland and Rameswaram island.
