Appleton in ringing terms is best known for the bell hanging firm of White's, situated in the village. The church of St Laurence contains a light ring of 10, crammed tight into the small tower; it is a fair squeeze, so much so that the entrance to the ringing room is up a small ladder through the centre of the floor! The bells are a hotchpotch of 1800's Mears, (6 recast in 1977,) and go and sound as such! However, many notable peals, many of them long lengths, have been rung here. We rattled them round fast as they went and sounded better like that, and, once we got used to the speed, had some nice ringing.
