On my way back to Nashville after a full day of #urbex exploring with my daughter @tnexplorer (TikTok) that included getting chased away by a guard at the abandoned Tennessee State Penitentiary, we found ourselves getting off an exit and seeing two buildings that turned out to be an abandoned Masonic Home for Widows and Orphans. It had been involved in a significant fire where I believe a homeless man perished, so they fenced it off and are taking steps and raising money to preserve it. Built in 1913 in the colonial revival style by the architects Asmus and Norton, it first served as an old age home for indigent Freemasons, later becoming a home for widows and orphans. During World War II it was used by the state of Tennessee as a tuberculosis hospital. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I would have loved to get a look inside but I am old now and not willing to trespass further than I did. It was beautiful in the fading light of day. #tennessee #abandoned #history #urbex #haunted #masonichome #widowsandorphans #urbanexploration #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #colonialrevivalarchitechture #tuberculosishospital
