Maximize Your Read-Alouds to Build Language Comprehension

As food and water are equally essential for life, both decoding and language comprehension are equally essential for reading comprehension. This webinar provides an evidence-based method for building language comprehension in young students. Using read-alouds of storybooks that children are not likely to independently read yet, educators, parents, and others who read to young children can strengthen components that contribute to language comprehension: oral language, vocabulary, and background knowledge. Participants will learn a bit about each of these as well as how to tailor a typical read aloud to maximize them, with the ultimate goal of benefiting language comprehension. Join Dr. Maria Murray as she provides a Text Talk framework that is easy to learn, fun (and no cost!) to implement, and powerful in building the essential component of reading comprehension - language comprehension. About the Presenter: Maria S. Murray, Ph.D. is the founder, CEO and President of The Reading League. A pioneer in the “science of reading” movement, she has been active in this field for more than 20 years. Prior to founding The Reading League, Maria was an associate professor at SUNY Oswego where she taught courses related to literacy assessment and intervention for 10 years. Passionate about the prevention and remediation of reading difficulty, Maria consistently strives to increase educator knowledge and strengthen the connections between research and practice. She received her Ph.D. in Reading Education from Syracuse University, where she taught as an adjunct and served as project coordinator for Benita Blachman’s numerous federally funded early reading intervention grants for 12 years.
