Radix with Iván Pérez. Designed and directed by Cristiano Leone.

DESIGNED AND DIRECTED BY CRISTIANO LEONE, RADIX IS AN AUDIOVISUAL PROJECT THAT PROMOTES THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN CONTEMPORARY CREATION, HISTORICAL HERITAGE, AND LANGUAGE AS A VEHICLE OF CULTURAL DIPLOMACY. The first chapter of the RADIX series is dedicated to Spain. Promoted by the Cultural Office of the Spanish Embassy in Rome, with the collaboration of the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome and the Cervantes Institute of Rome, RADIX has invited the Spanish dancer and choreographer Iván Pérez to dialogue with the Seneca language and with an emblematic monument of Roman and Spanish history, the Templete del Bramante. Unique example of the history of cultural diplomacy between Spain and Italy, ordered to be built by the Catholic Monarchs at the beginning of the 16th century, the Temple stands on the exact point at which, according to a medieval tradition, the martyrdom of Saint Peter took place. Like the Templete, Iván Pérez's choreography is built on the concept of circularity. Through an upward spiral movement, the choreographer turns time into a vector of movement and expansion that brings the inert columns back to life, suggesting a relationship of continuity between ancient, Renaissance and contemporary Rome. Pérez's performance is accompanied by the reading in Latin of some extracts from Seneca's De Brevitate Vitae. Seneca's election has a deeply symbolic valence: a key philosopher of Latin culture, his origins go back to Spain and he was a contemporary of Saint Peter. Along with Seneca, the choreographer ‘talks’ with our illustrious ancestors, from Socrates to Epicurus, through Zeno and Aristotle. Through this dialogue, his autobiographical account extends to infinity and opens up to a plurality of eras, as suggested by the Cordovan philosopher. The aesthetics of the short film pay homage to the Liberation of San Pedro by Bramante's friend Rafael, underlining and emphasizing the idea of a feast of illustrious spirits to which we are all invited. RADIX aspires to extend the project to other contemporary artists to explore together our roots, seek inspiration from our historical heritage and make our cultural genealogy the touchstone of the debate about our European identity.
