The special CBI court in Panchkula on 25 August (2017) convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a 2002 rape case and ordered him to be taken into judicial custody. Followers of Ram Rahim Singh are trying to get as close as possible to the courtroom where he has been kept in custody. Many vehicles including the OB vans of the media houses were torched and their cars were attacked leading to injuries. Heavy force was deployed in Sirsa as the crowd turned violent. Rapid Action Force also reached the spot. In an immediate response, Delhi and Gurgaon have been put on high alert now. Uttar Pradesh has reportedly sealed the border with Haryana. Ram Rahim Singh was taken to Rohtak and lodged in the district jail soon after his conviction. The home ministry told the Haryana government that Judge Jagdeep Singh should be provided highest level of security in view of the threat perception after he delivered the verdict against the Dera head. Over a thousand Dera followers have been taken into custody. Dera followers have been flushed out of Panchkula while over a thousand have been taken into preventive custody. In a video message, Dera Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh asked his followers not to come to Panchkula and appealed to those already staying in the city to return to their homes. In Panchkula, followers of the Dera sect set fire to the Income Tax Office. At least three railways stations in Punjab have been set on fire following the verdict against Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh. Police forces fired tear-gas canisters and water cannon into the crowd to try to restore control. The violence spread through Panchkula, Sirsa and other parts of Haryana, compelling security forces to take stern action against the angry mob running amok. Within hours, hundreds of vehicles were torched, media vans were overturned, and hospitals in Panchkula were deluged with people who sustained injuries during the violence. In the wake of riots that broke out after Gurmeet Ram Rahim's conviction, Section 144 was imposed in 11 districts of Delhi, 10 districts in Punjab and parts of Uttar Pradesh, too. Meanwhile, Railways has cancelled all trains to Rohtak in Haryana.
