Psalm 56 Explained: God is Faithful in Affliction

Psalm 56 is the song that was written when David was still in a place of danger, when the Philistines had seized him in Gath, the town of Goliath. While at Gath, David was very much afraid of Achish the king of Gath, and acted like a madman by making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard, in order to protect himself. (1 Samuel 21:12-13) This Psalm is a miktam which means in Hebrew "to engrave". In other words, David wants this Psalm to be engraved into his heart the wonderful truths of God that should never be forgotten. David wants us to remember that God is merciful and gracious, and we can trust Him. Ray Crocker is the Senior Pastor at Heritage Baptist Church Singapore.
