The system of Pronoia was the main administrative and social structural form that was similar in some ways to the granting of land in Western Medieval Europe. It was first extensively used by Alexios I and continued to be used up until the end of the empire. Famously Matthew Kantakuzenos was granted Thrace as a Pronoia grant by John VI. Pronoia allowed the beneficiary a land grant, the Paraiokoi dependant on the land or a tax - exemption inexchange for rendering military or civil service to the state and collecting taxes.
