Billerica & Bedford Railroad 125th Anniversary - 2002

To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the country's first two-foot-gauge, common-carrier railway, the Billerica & Bedford Railroad, Friends of Bedford Depot Park and the Maine Narrow-Gauge Railroad staged a special event. MNGRR steam locomotive #3 was operated for a weekend in the former Boston & Maine yard in Bedford, Massachusetts, very close to where the B&B operated in 1877-78. Before the visiting engine could be run, the existing yard track had to be regauged from standard gauge (4 feet, 8-1/2 inches) to two feet. Volunteers accomplished this task in August 2002 in advance of the event that was held on September 14 and 15. The next year, a municipal parking lot was built upon the old B&M yard, which was last used in the late 1970s.
