We will discuss the fascinating interplay between the host immune system and viruses in triggering demyelinating diseases of the brain. Renaud Du Pasquier, M.D. is associate professor in Neurology at UNIL--CHUV. After medical studies and board certification in Internal Medicine and Neurology in Geneva, he performed a post-doc in neuroimmunology/neurovirology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, from 1999 to 2004. Primarily devoted to the research in demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system, his laboratory tries to understand the respective contribution of the immune system, on one hand, and viruses, on the other hand, to the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. He also holds a clinical research program dealing with the neurocognitive disorders in HIV+ patients. About TEDx: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
