I have talked about this before in a different context - here is another example of training for tolerance! 🙈 Not all of the things we have to do to our dogs are things that they need to love doing. Wrigley tolerates bath-time. Frankly, I wouldn’t love a bath if I were a dog either! Would you? 🤷🏼♀️ Here is what I would recommend starting with to make bath time easier with your dog. 🐾 1. Practice when your dog does NOT need a bath. 2. Prep some high value treats. I prefer treats for training this, not something like a licki mat. 3. Start by tossing treats into and then out of the bathroom or zone that the bath takes place. If your dog doesn’t want to go in, no big deal, they don’t have to. The idea is to start building up positive associations with the location and your presence. 4. If your dog can exist in the bathroom, ask for behaviors like jumping in and out of the tub, offering a paw, and other handling type tricks they may know! Make it fun. 5. If they won’t approach the bathroom, work on these things just outside. 6. Work your way towards teaching them, “do a thing, then get the treat”. This helps for those necessary bath moments. Get in the tub, get a treat, offer your paw, get a treat, stay in the tub, get a treat…etc. 7. Session length: 5 minutes- keep it short! This is a BROAD starting place and some things to start thinking about.
