The Panama-Pacific International Exposition was a world's fair held in San Francisco from February 20 to December 4, 1915. Its stated purpose was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, but it was widely seen as an opportunity for the city to showcase its recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The fair was constructed on a 636 acre site along the northern shore (now known as the Marina District). In this film, there are segments devoted to equestrian events, stunt flying, wrestling, dancing, boating, pageantry... There are scenes of boats, including large warships, and a short play titled "Story of Jewel City" that was produced by the Exposition Players Company. This 16mm film was digitized by the California Audiovisual Preservation Project. #archive #rarefootage #sanfrancisco
