SOUNDBITE (English) Jose Manuel Barroso, European Commission President: "Europe is one of the most important partners of Asia in terms of investment and trade. In some cases, the first partner indeed. And so we want to discuss these issues with our Asian friends, namely what we can do together, facing global challenges. So not only discuss possibilities of trade and investment, but also the challenges in terms of stability and security in the region. These are of course important matters. We believe that this summit is an occasion to discuss these in an open way." 11. Wide of Barroso and Yingluck at news conference 12. The aim of the visit was to forge closer political and commercial ties with the country. The leaders agreed to explore further cooperation on issues such as human trafficking, transnational crime and money laundering. From Thailand, Barroso will travel to Laos, where he will attend the 9th Asia-Europe (ASEM) summit. Further discussions are expected over trade and investment links between the two regions and how Asia's dynamism can shore up a faltering Europe. "Europe is one of the most important partners of Asia in terms of investment and trade. In some cases, the first partner indeed," Barroso told reporters in Bangkok. "So we want to discuss this issue with our Asian friends, namely what we can do together, facing global challenges. So not only discuss possibilities of trade and investment, but also the challenges in terms of stability and security in the region. These are of course important matters. We believe that this summit is an occasion to discuss these in an open way," he continued. The normally quiet backwater of Laos has been preparing for months to host the summit. Among the heavyweights attending are China's Premier Wen Jiabao, Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, France's President Francois Hollande, Italy's Premier Mario Monti and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
