The IoT Closes the Loop on Product Lifecycle Management

Experts outline how connected devices are providing manufacturers with more information than ever before | Connect with PTC: http://ptc-iot.com/uYApXW1 The Internet of Things is about connecting devices, and that creates a wealth of opportunities for businesses in the form of the information that these smart devices are able to provide. This information is especially important to designers, engineers, and salespeople who work in lifecycle management. “Any customers developing products today are on a really exciting journey to transform those products for the Internet of Things,” explains Jill Newberg, senior director, market development, PLM, PTC. “They need to design them to collect the data that’s coming back from the field. So they need to design for the smart, connected world, and then they need to leverage that data back into their design and development process, to close the loop to see if that product was successful.” Jim Brown, president of Tech-Clarity, explains that this new technology is strengthening the relationship between consumers and manufacturers. “You think about what’s happening now, products used to go out the door, and they were gone,” Brown says. “Maybe you’d get a failure report, or maybe you’d get feedback from a handwritten form filled out by maybe one out of 1,000 people or something, and you really just weren’t in touch with the product anymore. And what’s happening now is products are staying in touch with the manufacturers, so they’ve got additional information. But they can also communicate back and make the product better over time, and so there’s this bi-directional communication, and an ongoing true lifecycle of the product, and it really enhances the relationship between the product, the customer, and the manufacturer.” Industry analyst Joe Barkai credits PTC and ThingWorx with driving innovation. “PTC is at the heart of the conversation these days, because PTC provides the platform, the open ThingsWorx platform,” Barkai says. “But PTC also provides momentum, provides leadership, provides excitement in the process. PTC is sort of drawing the board for the game.” Make sure you’re taking full advantage of the opportunities presented by IoT. Join the conversation on social media by following the #IoT hashtag.
