Lashkar-e-Taiba founder challenges US to provide evidence it has carried out terrorist acts

(26 Jun 2014) An anti-US group in Pakistan on Thursday rejected Washington's decision to brand his organisation a "terrorist" group saying US authorities should come up with evidence to prove the claim. Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the head of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), a group that the US considers an alias for banned group Lashkar-el-Taiba, claims his organisation is a charity. The UN also considers Jamaat-ud-Dawa to be a front group for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the militant organisation blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, a charge Saeed denies. Saeed claims the top courts in Pakistan have decided that the role of Jamaat-ud-Dawa "inside the country is clean." Washington on Wednesday added two individuals from Jamaat-ud-Dawa to its list of "Specially Designated Global Terrorists". Saeed called on the US authorities to show a proof regarding Nazir Ahmad Chaudhry and Muhammad Hussein Gill. In 2012, the United States offered a 10 million US dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of Saeed. He claims he has long abandoned its leadership and now heads Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The State Department originally designated LeT as a FTO (Foreign Terrorist Organisation) in December 2001, and the group was added to the United Nations' sanctions list in 2005.
