Travel Japan (Episode 8): Things to do in Takachiho (Kyushu, Japan)

Takachiho is a small, picturesque town located in the mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, renowned for its rich mythology, stunning natural landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, lush greenery and spiritual significance. The town's crown jewel is Takachiho Gorge, where towering basalt cliffs flank the emerald waters of the Gokase River, creating a stunning natural spectacle. The gorge’s steep rock formations and cascading Manai Falls offer a serene, almost mystical atmosphere. Surrounding mountains, terraced rice fields, and thick forests further enhance Takachiho's beauty, making it a haven for nature lovers and hikers seeking tranquillity and breathtaking views in the heart of rural Japan. Join us, while we explore the best things to do on Takachiho! Start (00:00) 00:18 - 1: Amaterasu Railway 高千穂あまてらす鉄道 The Amaterasu Railway is a scenic, tourist-focused railway located in Takachiho Town. This unique railway operates on a short track that is a remnant of the former Takachiho Railway, which was discontinued after a typhoon in 2005 caused significant damage.  The Amaterasu Railway is now run as a tourist attraction, offering open-air rides on small trolley cars, providing passengers with breathtaking views of the surrounding natural beauty, including forests, rivers, and the towering Takachiho Gorge. Named after Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess associated with the Takachiho region's mythology, the railway emphasizes the area's rich cultural and spiritual heritage.  The highlight (and furthest point) of the trip is the 5-minute halt in the middle of Takachiho Iron Bridge, once the highest (105m) railway bridge in Japan. The Amaterasu Railway combines natural scenery, cultural history, and a relaxing, immersive experience for travellers exploring the beauty of Kyushu. 02:09 - 2: Takachiho Gorge 高千穂峡 Takachiho Gorge, known for its dramatic cliffs, serene waters, and deep cultural significance, is probably the most famous site in Miyazaki Prefecture.  This spectacular gorge was formed by volcanic eruptions from nearby Mount Aso. Subsequently carved by the Gokase River, the gorge features towering basalt columns formed from volcanic activities, creating striking, sheer rock faces along the narrow canyon. Takachiho Gorge is also steeped in Japanese mythology. It is closely associated with the legend of Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, who retreats into the Ama-no-Iwato Cave, thus casting the world into darkness. She was said to hide in the cave until she was coaxed out by other gods.  The natural beauty of the area is complemented by seasonal changes, with lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and peaceful winter scenery, making Takachiho Gorge a must-visit destination for both nature lovers and those interested in Japan’s cultural heritage. 02:45 - 3: Manai Falls 真名井の滝 Manai Falls is a stunning waterfall located in Takachiho Gorge. The 17-meter-high waterfall is a key attraction in the mystical and scenic Takachiho region, known for its connection to Japanese mythology. Fed by the Gokase River, the waterfall plunges into the narrow, basalt-lined gorge, creating a picturesque scene of cascading water against sheer, volcanic rock walls. Though not the tallest/biggest, some view it as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Japan. Visitors can admire Manai Falls from walking paths along the gorge, or for a more immersive experience, they can rent rowboats to view the falls up close from the river. The area around the falls is lush and verdant, with vibrant greenery in spring and summer, and striking autumn foliage that adds to the beauty of the landscape. Pro Tip: If you are driving to Takachiho Gorge, note that most car park around the gorge requires a fee and have limited lots. The nearest free car park is Ohashi Parking Lot, which is a short walk (~15 minutes) from the gorge.  Date visited: Nov-2023 Read more at our Takachiho blog: https://www.balukootravel.com/things-... +++ Our website: https://www.BalukooTravel.com Follow us on Facebook:   / balukootravel   Instagram:   / balukootravel   Pinterest:   / allanseetoh   Twitter:   / balukootravel   +++ Music Credit Track: Special Days — JayJen [Audio Library Release] Music provided by Audio Library Plus Watch:    • Special Days — JayJen | Free Backgrou...   Free Download / Stream: https://alplus.io/special-days +++ #TakachihoGorge #AmaterasuRailway #ManaiFalls
