We’ve all heard the horror stories. What started out as a simple oil and filter change tuned into a nightmare. Starting an engine & revving it without oil pressure. What??? That’s right, due to a variable displacement vane oil pump, oil can drain out during the change process and the pump will not re-prime itself after oil is added. Why is a variable displacement pump used? The variable displacement oil pump has been added to these engines to help improve engine efficiency by cutting down on engine parasitic loads. Some have replaced the OEM pump with a gear type pump to help eliminate the wear associated with the vane pump as well as pressure loss during oil changing. So, what can you do if you are changing your oil without a lengthy prime process to get your Ranger up and running again & not pull the hair out of your head?
