While a deep edge canvas does not need to be framed, whether it's painted in oils, acrylics or watercolour, you might choose to do so. This will protect the edges, give it more presence and make it stand out on the wall it is hung upon. A thin edge canvas or panel should nearly always be framed. A floating or tray frame is a lovely contemporary way to show off your art work. You can buy either ready made float frames, or get one made to your size and then easily assemble it yourself. I like a 1cm gap between the canvas and frame to create the floating illusion, so measure your canvas and check with the manufacturer whether they automatically add the shadow area. If not, add an appropriate amount so that the inner edge of the frame is 2cm longer than the canvas. I show you two different ways of fixing your frame. It is very straight forward. One thing I forgot to say is that you can add little 'bumpers' at the bottom two corners of your frame to stop it marking the wall and to ensure it hangs straight. The frames I show in this film came from (not affiliate links): www.pictureframesexpress.co.uk and www.seawhite.co.uk Every week I do a short film to share a tip or technique, at 2pm each Sunday, so please like and subscribe to be updated.
