Hālau o Kekuhi at the 2024 Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Founded in 1973, Hālau o Kekuhi is a matrilineal organization led today by Kumu Hula Nālani Kanakaʻole followed by Huihui Kanahele-Mossman. The esteemed hālau hula (classical dance school) is part of the Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation, which is dedicated to the elevation of Native Hawaiian knowledge and practice. In 2024, the group performed at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, on the National Mall and inside the National Museum of the American Indian, as part of the program “Indigenous Voices of the Americas.” In this video, the group performs three chants: “Hoʻopuka I Kai Ka Lā,” “Aia Lā ʻO Pele I Hawaiʻi,” and “Pua Hau O Maleka.” Performers: Huihui Kanahele-Mossman (kumu hula), Nalani Kanakaole (kumu hula), Natsumi Barcelona, Kekuhi Haililani Kanahele, Lanihuli Kanahele, Kaua Kanaka'ole-Ioane Cameras: Ali Ali, Ned Driscoll, Trinity Le, Charlie Weber Editor: Ali Ali Transcription: Halena Kapuni-Reynolds Catalog No. CFV11780; © Smithsonian Institution, 2024
