If one sound is ten times more intense than another, it is exactly 10 dB louder. Question 13 Calculate the volume of a sound that is: (a) ten times louder than a 24 dB sound. A change of ten decibels corresponds to a tenfold increase in volume, so 24 + 10 = 34 dB ↙ (b) ten times softer than a 9 dB sound. 9 - 10 = -1 dB (This is below the limit of human hearing) Decibels (dB) are a unit used to express the ratio of a physical quantity (usually power or intensity) relative to a specified or implied reference level. In sound measurement, decibels describe the sound pressure level (SPL) or loudness of a sound. The formula for measuring sound volume in decibels is: dB = 20 * log10 (P / P0) Where: P is the measured sound pressure P0 is a reference sound pressure, typically 20 μPa (micropascals) for airborne sound or 1 μPa for underwater sound. Note that decibels are logarithmic, meaning that a 3 dB increase in sound pressure level represents a doubling of the sound pressure, while a 10 dB increase represents a tenfold increase.
