Zeeva Yohan performs a cover of ‘Must Be Nice’ by Lyfe Jennings w/looper station live backing. I was introduced to this song by a guy named Anthony from Ohio. I met him during a gig on Wednesday 07th August 2024. He requested this song alongside Heartbreak Anniversary (look out for that cover next week God’s willing) - neither songs i knew as yet. He and his wife Natalie promised to come see me the same Friday to hear the songs, so i had a little less than three days to learn them. I attached two pedals to my lil Roland amp to make use of the built-in looper station and got to work. When Friday came i was ready for them. I plugged up, refreshed my memory on the lyrics, and let it rip. Needless to say, i got a bear hug from the big guy following my attempt at doing the songs justice. I felt good about that interaction, but perhaps more so, the value i derived was being made aware of this song. I always saw the Lyfe Jennings’ “Must Be Nice” MV thumbnail on YouTube but never clicked in. You see, that’s the beauty of receiving requests when offering cover songs - people put you on to some heat. All of that to say, i love this song bad bad bad. I love it dearly, in other words. Thanks to Anthony and his lovely wife for doing me a solid and introducing me to a classic. Hope you all like my lil loop-station-backed interpretation of it. I think I’ll consider doing more songs with my looper. It often reminds me of my musical hero, Ed Sheeran. Some of my original songs will benefit from that practice and implementation for sure. I’m thankful for you all, stay safe x #lyfejennings #mustbenice #acousticcover #folkpop #looperpedal #edsheeran FYI: A looper records an instrument and/or voice live then plays it back on demand and can be layered to form a repeating musical phrase, typically utilized to give live performances a fuller sound. For example, in my video here I start off by prompting the looper to record my guitar playing different things (a rhythm, a beat, a groove); then I add vocals and layer them in different keys to give a sound similar to that of background singers or a small choir. Afterwards I step on the pedal to stop overdubbing (or layering my input) and let the live recording play as I begin to sing the song ‘Must Be Nice’ over what I had just recorded. Finally, towards the end, I stopped the recording altogether to end the song on a more stripped down, acoustic vibe. The recording then erases and to do it again another time I’d need to start over from scratch since the looper I use does not save the recordings long-term, only temporarily while I’m performing a song. Hence why this video is so long 😂, I needed to record my backing tracks on the spot to then sing on top of them. I think I’ll post a shortened version that starts from the actually singing, just to save listeners some time in getting to the song itself. Thanks for being here xx
