A few weeks of measuring, cutting, assembling and tweaking, and I'm finally set up with quadraphonic speakers surrounding my new studio. In a feat of good timing, some friends came to visit and an impromptu modular performance ensued. It was my first time playing the modular for a mini-sized audience. It's truly thrilling to perform live, something I haven't done musically for a long time. And I was equally thrilled with the result. The performance was a little rough around the edges, but it caught people where I wanted... enough so that they asked for a second round. I've been working on this instrument—learning and building it—for more than a year. It's gratifying to have arrived to a point where I'm playing at as an instrument and not (only) patching it as a fun musical toy. And quadraphonic is something to be experienced. It moved people to be inside the sound like that, and left a few of them lacking for words. Something to try out if you ever get the chance. I didn't record the impromptu show, but I kept the patch up and recorded another pass of the same ideas. It's a little rough around the edges with a few unexpected drops in spots (I'm having an unknown source of DC enter my audio chain occasionally). Even so, I thought it worth sharing, both as a marker of where I am at this moment as some music to groove to.
