Satellite-Derived Bathymetry for Coastal Resiliency in the Republic of Kiribati

Satellite derived bathymetry (SDB) has been widely used over the past several decades to map shallow water regions throughout the world. While SDB will never rival LiDAR in terms of accuracy and precision, it is a relatively low-cost alternative that can be deployed almost instantaneously in remote regions as a reconnaissance tool for LiDAR surveys or to fill gaps in previously collected survey data. With ArcGIS Pro as part of the workflow, TCarta used a physics-based, radiometric matching SDB approach to successfully chart over 3,100 km2 of seafloor surrounding the Republic of Kiribati, comprised of 34 atolls and 3 reefs, many of which have not been surveyed in the last century, if ever.  TCarta used 87 satellite images from the DigitalGlobe satellite platforms at 2 m spatial resolution. The SDB survey was commissioned by the UK government under the Commonwealth Marine Economy Programme for the Republic of Kiribati, establishing a baseline resource for planning for the immediate threat of sea level rise. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on Social Media!
