II 9 DETHAL II | Culture Devotion And Folks of The Himalayas | Kullu Dussehra is a unique and grand festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is different from the Dussehra celebrations in other parts of India, as it starts on the tenth day of the Hindu month of Ashwin when Dussehra ends elsewhere and continues for seven days. It is also known as the International Mega Dussehra festival, as it attracts tourists and artists from all over the world. The history of Kullu Dussehra goes back to the 17th century, when Raja Jagat Singh, the king of Kullu, brought the idol of Lord Raghunath (Lord Rama) from Ayodhya and installed it on his throne as a mark of repentance for his sins. He also started the tradition of taking out a procession of Lord Raghunath and other local deities on a chariot, called Rath Yatra, on the first day of the festival. The Rath Yatra is followed by various cultural and religious events, such as folk dances, music, rituals, fairs, exhibitions, and sports. The festival culminates with the burning of a huge pile of wood and grass, symbolizing the burning of Lanka by Lord Rama.
