Meghalaya: NEHU Vice-Chancellor faces backlash over Registrar’s appointment

According to NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), the newly appointed Registrar lacks a clear understanding of NEHU’s rules and regulations. Tensions escalated when the Vice-Chancellor defended the Registrar during an Academic Council meeting. Students requested the Vice-Chancellor to leave the meeting, but he refused, leading to a walkout by both students and faculty members. NEHUSU President Sandy Sohtun criticized the appointment, calling it "unprecedented" and urging for the immediate removal of the Registrar. "Today, NEHUSU and North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) had several agendas for discussion in the Academic Council Meeting, where the Registrar was also present. We found him unfit to act as secretary or take minutes. NEHUSU and NEHUTA called for the Registrar's removal, but the Vice-Chancellor sided with him. This led us to walk out of the meeting to protest," Sohtun said. The NEHUTA also echoed similar views. Speaking to the media Vice-President of the teachers’ association Prasenjit Biswas alleged that the behavior of the Registrar showed a lack of respect for the Vice-Chancellor and the Academic Council. "He was so ill-manned that he was sitting when the honourable Vice-Chancellor was speaking to the other members of the Academic Council. He insulted and humiliated the whole Academic Council right on the floor, in the visibility of everyone. Therefore, we thought that he is unfit to run the office of the Registrar and NEHUTA believes that NEHU requires a gross course correction.
