Safety Dance on a Dulcimer

“Safety Dance,” the 1983 hit by the Canadian band, Men Without Hats, covered on chromatic dulcimer by Sam Edelston. I somehow missed this song when it was a hit and, in a bit of a time warp, learned about it through one of my kids in just the past few years. For my rock fans and friends, I’ve heard Men Without Hats called a new wave or synth pop band. For my folkie fans and friends, the band’s official video of the song features Morris dancing. It's pretty unusual for a rock video, and worth checking out.    • Видео   The song was written by band member Ivan Doroschuk. I’ll admit, with the title, I thought it might be appropriate for this pandemic moment we’re living in, but, no, it’s “a protest against bouncers prohibiting dancers from pogoing to 1980s new wave music in clubs.” Though I considered updating the lyrics, I decided it’s just too much fun to play as an instrumental. Though usually associated with old folk songs and tunes, the mountain dulcimer is a natural rock (and pop) instrument. In fact, I call it a more logical first stringed instrument than guitar -- with fewer strings and (usually) fewer frets, it just seems to me that there ought to be millions of people wanting to play, if only they realized it was relevant to their music. I do these videos to inspire more people to play and listen to dulcimer music, in diverse, non-traditional styles. While I could have plugged the dulcimer into some effect pedals, it was safer not to. The on-screen text at the start of the video is a nod to the original recording, where, over the intro music, the singer says, "S-A-F-E-T-Y ... Safety ... Dance."
