KPOP Y2K UKG || mixtape by DJ Joey Santos

I LOVE UKG! My first introduction to it was through a compilation I stumbled upon at Music One in Manila called "This Is Speed Garage". Speed Garage is a darker sub-genre of UKG with an emphasis on bass. This was in the late 90s when I started getting into DJing thanks to DJ heroes of mine Toti Dalmacion (Groovenation) and Manolet Dario (NBK) who championed house and trance respectively. I bough the compilation and loved it straight away: UK Garage was fast, had sampled and often pitchshifted vocals, and a distinct UK Hip-Hop flow and R&B flavor that strayed from what was coming out of the US. The comp had seminal tracks like Roy Davis Jr's Gabriel and the Garage remix of Sneaker Pimps' Spin Spin Sugar. I loved it because they gave me a different vibe that I could use in my DJ sets, so I dug into the genre and collected tracks throughout the oughts. While it was still big in the UK, the global presence of UKG dipped when EDM conquered the US (and by extension The Philippines) in the 2010s. Fast forward to the 2020s and I'm so glad that contemporary K-Pop references everything I loved about UK Garage but with a bubblegum pop twist. This mixtape is a celebration of those K-Pop tracks blended alongside some of my favorite UKG cuts from back in the day. Plus I stitched in some clips from our Seoul honeymoon this 2024. Enjoy!
