REUPLOAD/REMIX On October 16, 1965, the third day of recording for Rubber Soul, The Beatles entered EMI for a 9 1/2 hour recording session. The first 8 1/2 hours were spent working on the classic Day Tripper while the last hour or so was spent recording the rhythm track to Harrisons If I Needed Someone. Supposedly, the group nailed it on the first take! The Beatles were on their usual lineup consisting of Harrison on lead guitar, Lennon on rhythm guitar, McCartney on bass and Starr on drums. A few days later on October 18, the group went in to studio two for a three hour session. The first 90 min or so were required to lay down the overdubs to If I Needed Someone. Harrison recorded his lead vocals and then double tracked them. This overdub ended up on "track three" of the four track tape. Afterwards, Lennon and McCartney sang harmonies and then double tracked those aswell. This dub ended up being "track four" of the four track tape. After this, Harrison overdubbed the solo and the outro (which was played in unison with the rhythm track), and Starr overdubbed tambourine onto the same track. By 4pm the song was finished! THE GUITAR PARTS: Harrison used his brand new 1965 Rickenbacker 360/12 with a capo at the 7th fret. Like Norwegian Wood, this song was written around a D chord shape. While he doesn’t do anything flashy, take note of how he plays the vocal melody on the guitar. At 1:17, take note of the figure he plays around the C major chord shape. For the last chord of the song, Harrison upstrokes the first 3 strings. Lennon used his Sonic Blue 1961 Fender Strat. For his part (played to perfection for this video by Grant Gerlach), Lennon upstrokes through the chords for the verses, choruses, and the bridge. In the solo he changes his strumming pattern to that reminiscent of Roger McGuinn's banjo picking technique. This adds an incredible texture to the solo. Other than that, nothing flashy. Thats about it!! GEAR USED: 1965 spec Rickenbacker 360/12 (courtesy of @AngryShredder2004 . Thanks, Marcus!!) Fender Stratocaster VOX AD100
