Behari Chaapa - A timeless cultural wedding dress refuses to retire. | Bihari Muslim Culture

A traditional Bihari bridal dress with silver block print, popularly referred to as “Chaapa”, is especially made to be worn on the day of Nikah. The history of Chaapa can be traced back as early as 19th century when Francis Buchanan, in his journal, written in 1811 – 1812, wrote briefly on the chaapa. He mentioned about the chaapa clothes fabrication & its significant demand among the Muslim Bihari families. No Bihari Muslim nikah ceremony is complete without chaapa clothes. Previously the entire family wore chaapa. Today due to the influence of other cultures, chaapa is only fabricated in Patna, Bihar Sharif and Gaya. Earlier the chaapa was fabricated in multiple parts of Bihar which includes – Patna , Jahanabad, Bihar Sharif, Sheikhpura, Gaya, Nawada, Aurangabad, Munger, Dharbhanga among many others. Chaapa is extremely affordable and in a way bridges the gap between the rich and poor. It can be worn as suits, sarees, gharara and shararas. Chaapa continues to remain popular among the Bihari Muslim families both nationally and internationally. The Bihari Muslims living in USA, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Canada, Australia, Middle East continue purchasing the chaapa clothes for their children’s wedding. In this video we interacted to the people of Patna, Bihar Sharif and Gaya, involved in the making of chaapa. +916203972718 Naushad (Gaya) 97982 46365 Pappu (Patna) #Patna #Gaya #clothing #clothingbrand #LostMuslimHeritageOfBihar #Chapa #Bihar #Bihari #Culture #BihariChhapa #BihariMuslimDiaspora #BihariTraditions
