Din Eidyn, Y Gododdin, and Identity - Who was at the Battle of Catraeth?

Recently I was lucky enough to be able to visit Castle Rock in Edinburgh, the site of the early medieval fortress of Din Eidyn. I thought that while I was there, I would take some time to talk about Y Gododdin, an early medieval poem about warriors who set out from Din Eidyn to fight, and ultimately die, at Catraeth, further south (usually identified with Catterick, in Yorkshire). Most of the ideas I discussed here come from the book The Gododdin of Aneirin : text and context from Dark-Age North Britain by John Koch. The readings were mostly from the translations in The Celtic Heroic Age, by John Koch and John Carey, with the exception of the Annals of Ulster, which was from the Corpus of Electronic Texts run by University College Cork. And speaking of readings, I of course need to give a wonderful thank you to all of the readers who volunteered their time for this project. They do a lot of work on their own, and you can find them all here (in order of appearance): Zac, from the Interesting Nerd Club ‪@InterestingNerdClub‬ Random Internet Guy ‪@randominternetguyoffical‬ Nefanda Astra @Nefanda Astra Sasha Brecht ‪@sashabrecht‬ Meera Reads ‪@MeeraReads‬
