In Search Of…Boogie Down Productions (My Philosophy) The iconic music video for Boogie Down Productions’ track ‘My Philosophy’, filmed in black and white, on a random street in New York City, had always been a favorite. Directed by Hip-Hop, Graffiti, and Taste-making pioneer Fab Five Freddy, the musical start to the video begins with emcee KRS-ONE, emerging from a Jeep, in front of two large garage doors. He begins to rap to the beat, when suddenly the music stops, and he is saying his rhyme a cappella. 35 years later, Fab Five Freddy was celebrating the anniversary of the shoot, on IG. A keen-eyed Lee Haych Hodgkiss (Delta Bravo Urban Exploration Team), thought to publicly ask Freddy, if he remembered the details of the location. Freddy responded. He said that the performance part of the video was shot at the famed Fun House dance club. They had walked across the street to film the sequence with KRS, and the Jeep. Once we nailed down the location and history of the Fun House, it was a matter of visiting the spot, taking our photos, and documenting the meet up. This was especially gratifying, because we were able to connect in person. Lee, from Blackpool, in the UK, let us know that he’d be in town. Rayen and Andy made plans to be on the exact spot, on the day Lee planned to walk up. Exciting to re-visit this location, so many years later. The Jeep a cappella happened just next door to where the Sean Murphy Beastie Boys photos were shot (Check out ‘In Search Of…Sean Murphy). Although now it’s a nondescript, even boring, section of W. 26th St., at one time, it was a bustling hive of Hip-Hop activity and creative expression. It was gratifying to put all of these pieces together. Thanks, Lee, Fab Five Freddy, KRS, Rayen, Richie, and Nick - This was a real group effort. Fresh for ‘88!…You suckas!
