This piece is from the composer's second book of Etudes (six in each set), where he branched out from the didactic exercises of the first set, to a different set of technical demands and a deeper style of music. Being fond of arpeggios, I was naturally drawn to this study. I was also attracted to Debussy's novel use of this technique and nonharmonic tones.
