When KishaLynn met Shelli one night while out in West Hollywood, it was basically love at first sight. Before long, they were living together and discussing what their future might look like. Just as they were about to celebrate their one-year anniversary as a couple in 2008, the California courts ruled that same-sex couples were entitled to the same marriage rights as straight couples. The only problem? Proposition 8 - a statewide referendum limiting marriage access to opposite-sex couples - was going to be on that ballot that year. KishaLynn and Shelli decided to get married in secret while they awaited the outcome of that vote. Devastatingly, the proposition passed by a healthy margin and though marriages performed prior to the vote were ruled valid, the couple kept their marriage under wraps for the next five years. Until one day, that is, when the proposition was ruled unconstitutional. In the blink of an eye, same-sex couples across the country were able to enjoy the same rights as their straight counterparts, and KishaLynn and Shelli could finally - and publicly - celebrate their legal union.
