Why is dengue vaccine only given to certain groups of kids? – Healthy at Home with Dr. Handy

Dr. Lori Handy talks about dengue virus and its symptoms, including fever, vomiting, fatigue and muscle aches. Many people will have a mild illness, but others might experience more severe dengue. She talks about the dengue vaccine and why it’s only recommended for certain groups of children. The dengue vaccine is recommended for 9- to 16-year-olds who live in an area where dengue infections are common and who were previously diagnosed with dengue by blood test. Dr. Handy talks about why this last part — having a medical confirmation of a previous dengue infection — is so important, describing what is called antibody-dependent enhancement, or ADE. 00:00 Introduction 00:22 What is dengue? 00:41 Symptoms of dengue infection 01:00 Risk for severe dengue after initial infection 01:36 Dengue vaccine and recommendations For more information about the “Healthy at Home with Dr. Handy” series or other Parents PACK programs, please visit our website, http://vaccine.chop.edu/parents.
