Be Scam Savvy! Don't be a Victim

In 2023, seniors lost $3.4 billion to scams, a stark indication of how fraudsters exploit their vulnerability, especially through technology that many older adults find challenging. Their time at home, limited tech skills, and accumulated wealth make them prime targets. Scammers commonly use imposter scams, with $2.7 billion in losses, where they impersonate authorities like IRS or Social Security officials, or even relatives, manipulating seniors emotionally to extract money. For instance, “Grandparent Scams” exploit seniors' familial concerns, while “Tech Support Scams,” costing victims $924 million, use fake warnings to trick people into surrendering control of their devices. Romance scams have also seen a troubling rise, with victims losing an average of $190,000 each by building trust through fake relationships and then requesting financial help. Phishing scams continue, where scammers pose as banks or other institutions via emails or texts to obtain sensitive data. To counter these threats, experts recommend 10 preventive steps: blocking unknown calls, avoiding sharing information with unsolicited contacts, verifying requests with known sources, consulting trusted individuals before acting on urgent messages, and enabling security features like two-factor authentication and credit freezes. Public awareness, education, and open family discussions are key defenses against these scams. For further assistance, victims can report scams at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
