Black Swan -The Story of the Australian Species that made Europeans say "' Black is so Beautiful''

The Black Swans were first brought to England in 1791 as ornamental birds just like the British brought peacocks from India. Black Swans were endemic to Australia. Until then, the Western World assumed that Swans in Black color never existed. The Roman satirist Juvenal wrote in AD 82 of "a rare bird in the lands, and very like a black swan"). He meant something whose rarity would compare with that of a black swan, as a black swan did not exist. It was a statement of impossibility. In later years, this gave birth to the Black Swan theory. The black swan theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalised after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. But before we go, I have a question for the viewers. The footage behind me was shot in Melbourne City, Just two kilometers from the Melbourne CBD. Where that could be? I encourage you to watch the video till the end as good footages are towards the end. His expedition took three swans to Batavia in Indonesia, but the birds died. Black Swans in nature are very gentle creatures The females of the species are smaller than the males. Males grow about 1.3 metres long and females grow to 1.2 metres. Females also have slightly shorter necks than males. Black Swans have a trumpet-like call. Though they are big birds, they fly quite large distances outside the breeding season. They usually fly at night and rest during the day. The male Black Swan is known as a cob while the female Black Swan is known as a pen. The baby is called a cygnet. Black swans are almost entirely vegetarian. They feed mainly on algae and submerged weeds, which they pull up by 'updending' – tipping forward and reaching their long necks down below the surface, their bottoms in the air and their legs comically waggling. The adult Black Swan measures between 110 and 142 cm in length and weighs 3.7–9 kg . Its wing span is between 1.6 and 2 meters . The bill is bright red, with a pale white bar at its tip; and legs and feet are greyish-black. Cobs are slightly larger than pens, with a longer and straighter bill. Cygnets are a greyish-brown with pale-edged feathers. . In adult Black Swans, the body is mostly black, with the exception of the broad white wing tips which are visible in flight. The bill is a deep orange-red, paler at the tip, with a distinct narrow white band towards the end. Younger birds are much greyer in colour which you can see in the video. Black Swans prefer larger salt, brackish or fresh waterways and permanent wetlands, requiring 40 m or more of clear water to take off. Outside the breeding season, Black Swans travel quite large distances. Birds fly at night and rest during the day with other swans. Black Swans are found throughout Australia with the exception of Cape York Peninsula and are more common in the south. Black Swans have broad white wing tips which are visible in flight From Australia, Black Swans were introduced to United Kingdom, United States, Japan and China . In 1864, the Australian black swan was introduced to New Zealand as an ornamental waterfowl and populations are now common on larger coastal or inland lakes. Black swans have also naturally flown to New Zealand, leading scientists to consider them a native rather than exotic species. In New Zealand black Swans reached the invasive status. The black swan is also very popular as an ornamental waterbird in western Europe, especially Britain. In Japan, there are wild populations of Black Swans having originally been imported during 1950–1960. Introduced Black Swans can be found in some places in United States and in China. The species, which originated in Australia, is common in wildlife parks in the UK, but is rarely sighted in the wild, same goes with United States. In Europe there is a superstition attributing a sinister relationship between black colored animals such as black cat to the devil. Because of this association, it is assumed that Black Swans were chased away or killed by superstitious folk, which explains why black Swans have never established a sizeable presence as feral animals in Europe or North America.
