It prevents conversion of acetaldehyde into acetic acid. The accumulation of acetaldehyde produces symptoms like headache, dizziness, facial flushing, abdominal distress and vomiting. Other drugs like metronidazole, sulfonylureas, cotrimoxazole and procarbazine also cause similar reaction possibly due to accumulation of acetaldehyde.
