13 September 2024 marks four years since Umar Khalid was jailed in connection with the Delhi riots conspiracy case without bail or trial. Other activists have been jailed for even longer. Our reporting shows how the case against him has been built on inferences, conjectures and partial truths. Fifty-three people were killed in the riots that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020. Three-quarters of them are Muslim. Of the 18 people chargesheeted in the case, 16 are Muslim. The case pins the blame for the riots on the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, making out that opposing the government of the day and its policies is an attack on the country.
