On today’s voyage, we make the trek down the inside of the Bahama bank from Highbourne Cay to Shroud Cay, a part of the Bahamas Land and Sea Park. Our voyage was 33.6 nautical miles and took us just short of four hours to make the trek. Our voyage to the Washing Machine was made without advance knowledge as to what to do there, so we missed out on bodysurfing the currents on our own, rather than on the dingy, which was unfortunate, but leaves something for us to look forward to on a return visit. Apparently, the tidal current creates a swift circular current that sweeps around the peninsula creating an exciting ride reminiscent of a spin cycle on the washing machine. The currents were not terribly strong when we were there, so next time we will time it better! Following our ‘washing machine’ adventure, we set off for a quick but scenic hike up the nearby hill to reach Camp Driftwood. The well-trodden path is easy to spot just off the serene Driftwood Beach. While only remnants of the camp remain today, its story is steeped in intrigue. Established in the 1960s by a sailor who lived aboard his boat moored inside Shroud Cay, the camp later became infamous in the 1980s. During that time, the DEA covertly used this very spot to monitor the infamous Pablo Escobar’s operations on Norman’s Cay, just to the north.
