09.4.0: Dynamic Meteorology: Scale Analysis: The Vertical Momentum Equation

This is a selection and collection of lectures in Dynamic Meteorology. I consider scale analysis one of the most important skills for dynamic meteorology, science, and, in fact, it is a useful life skill. How do I quickly analyze a situation and compare one thing to another? In this lecture, the vertical momentum equation is scaled for large-scale, rotating flows at middle latitudes. This reveals the domination of the hydrostatic balance in the vertical direction. The vertical acceleration is several orders of magnitude smaller than the hydrostatic balance. How do we, then, get vertical motion. For large-scale systems it occurs, but it instantaneously adjusts to the hydrostatic balance. We arrive, therefore, at a situation where we have the geostrophic and hydrostatic balance largely define the flow. Very powerful. But, we are interested in how the flow changes, and this means investigating the "small" differences from these balances. A link to the full series is at: https://openclimate.org/course-collec...
